Awakenings

A heartwarming and heartbreaking medical drama starring Robin Williams as a shy neurologist who uses a miracle drug to 'awaken' patients who have been trapped in a catatonic state for decades. Set in 1969, it is the true story of Leonard, the first patient to respond to the treatment, movingly played by Robert De Niro. De Niro earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor while the film was in the running for Best Picture.

Awakenings In 1969, a dozen patients, catatonic since surviving encephalitis 30 to 40 years earlier, were revived temporarily by a caring doctor and a new drug.

Dramatically, the film is hampered by the fact that its high point, the 'awakening' itself, occurs halfway through the story and the downbeat aspects set in from then on.

But there is still much to admire and touch the emotions throughout the film. Robin Williams touchingly captures the withdrawn nature of Dr Sayer, the neurologist who finds it easier to communicate with a catatonic patient than with his unimpaired fellows.

Julie Kavner, as his faithful nurse, and John Heard as the sceptical chief of medicine, are also excellent. But the acting plaudits go to De Niro, who was still at the top of his game.
