Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett are in their element as a couple who romance then confront life's slings and arrows. Julius J Epstein contributes an expertly judged confection of laughter and tears in a script that has its fair share of puns and one-liners ("Beware of Greeks wearing lifts"), while director Martin Ritt is the ideal choice for this good-hearted material. Good though the other players are (Geraldine Page was Oscar nominated), it's Matthau and Burnett's triumph. She loyally props up one of Matthau's most appealing turns from his best period, and handles the drama at the end of the movie with considerable flair. An appealing, moving, old-fashioned movie.
