Taylor's breakthrough performance came in the Oscar-winning Shine opposite Geoffrey Rush.
After moving from England to Australia, his first part was as a "Bowie Fan" in the movie Dogs in Space.
He came to the attention of audiences in John Duigan's The Year My Voice Broke, which landed him a nomination for Best Actor at the Australian Film Awards.
He went on to star in Flirting with Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton before winning the role of the teenage David Helfgott in Shine.
A favourite of director Cameron Crowe he appeared in the rock drama Almost Famous and as the Tom Cruise's dream peddlar in Vanilla Sky.
He also starred as Bryce in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and portrayed a youthful Hitler opposite John Cusack in the flawed Max.
