Director John Ford gave Jean Arthur her big break in 1923 in 'Cameo Kirby', but her career failed to take off. Twelve years later, he finally made her a star with this excellent combination of farce and melodrama that was a huge box-office hit, shown in British cinemas as 'Passport to Fame'. Edward G Robinson has great fun playing dual roles, as a timid white collar clerk and his 'double', 'Killer Mannion', a notorious gangster. And as the girlfriend with a smart lip, Arthur (who dyed her hair blonde for the role) firmly established her screen persona as a wisecracking, cynical woman who would usually start taking advantage of an idealist, eventually fall in love with him, and then use her worldly knowledge to help him beat the bad guys by the end of the picture.
