As a child, Russell studied martial arts for several years, which now means that he performs many of his own stunts in movies.
Russell made his feature film debut in the US with the adaptation of James Clavell's Tai-pan.
He went on to star in Eat A Bowl Of Tea, and China Girl. He also had leading roles in China Cry, the box office hit New Jack City and the critically acclaimed The Joy Luck Club.
In recent years, Russell has taken lessons in film production at the New York University, to broaden his entertainment industry knowledge in all areas, including directing.
One of his favourite hobbies is photography.
