Gérard Depardieu plays a Frenchman in America who weds horticulturalist Andie MacDowell to obtain the Green Card that will enable him to stay.
She in turn can claim a great apartment with refectory/greenhouse attached - only available to married couples.
They part as strangers, and everything is fine until immigration decides to investigate.
In an enforced weekend together, Depardieu and MacDowell discover what the rest of us have guessed from reel one: but that's romantic cinema for you.
Very nicely done, all the same, with dialogue that smacks sweetly of ad-libbing, and an inspired sequence where the 'happy' couple invents a series of honeymoon snapshots.
