Imagine how James Hilton's famous story of Shangri-La would be remade as a musical by the producer of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson comedies, and you'll have a pretty fair idea of how this frothy farrago of a musical turned out. Liv Ullmann, so brilliant in Ingmar Bergman films, has never been very lucky with her choice of international roles. Here, she and Peter Finch seem singularly ill-at-ease with a tuneful Burt Bacharach score that includes the catchy `The World Is A Circle'. But the scene-setting is extremely well done, and veteran Charles Boyer is excellent as the wise and ancient High Lama.
