A gentle, almost inconsequential crime comedy-thriller about a young burglar's brief but fruitful apprenticeship in the hands of an old pro. Burt Reynolds is faintly uneasy as the sexagenarian safecracker, a part to which he does bring a certain faded charm as well as a new toupee that permits him to look slightly thin on top - but carefully coiffed, as would befit a man meticulous about both his appearance and his felonious profession. Scottish director Bill Forsyth certainly brings a fresh approach to American crime: the action, such as it is, is hardly dynamic and the emphasis decidedly on character. Unfortunately, neither Reynolds nor Casey Siemaszko really live their parts, and the more down-to-earth impression is made by one-time L. A. Law star Sheila Kelley as Siemaszko's prostitute girlfriend.
