Strongly cast but scripted in such a way as to preclude sympathy for its protagonist, this is a courageous and clear-headed, if not terribly entertaining remake of the harrowing 1958 film that won Susan Hayward an Oscar. Here it's Lindsay Wagner, giving a performance of depth and dignity that helps tone down the melodramatic aspects of the script, as the woman condemned to the gas chamber for a crime she may not have committed. The supporting cast is stuffed with distinctive character stars, notably Pamela Reed (particularly good as a determined reporter), Harry Dean Stanton, Martin Balsam, Robert Englund, Anne Ramsey, Don Stroud and Seymour Cassel.
