Caught in a blizzard on the way back from the wilds of Colorado after finishing his new book, novelist James Caan is rescued after his car crashes. With both legs broken, he awakes in a bed in a house in the countryside. But he still has a survival problem: his saviour (Kathy Bates) is as nutty as a fruitcake. A former nurse given to fits of frenzy, his hostess is not only the 'dragon lady' of past headlines, but unfortunately his number one fan. Worse still, she turns to fury when she reads his just-published novel and finds out that he has killed off Misery Chastain, the heroine of all the rest. This is a fine old two-hander in traditional shocker style, well played by Caan and particularly Bates, who won an Oscar.
