This is a big film with a big star (John Wayne), big director (Cecil B DeMille) and a big story. There's even a big squid in the scene everyone seems to remember. Set in the 1840s, it's the tale of a sea captain (Wayne) whose ship gets wrecked off the Florida Keys by a shady gang led by a dastardly Raymond Massey. Paulette Goddard is the love interest and the strong cast includes Ray Milland, Preston Foster, Charles Bickford and a young Susan Hayward. As one would expect from DeMille, it's a large-scale, sprawling adventure, shot in vigorous Technicolor with no expense spared. Thrilling stuff. TRIVIA: Wayne must be the only major star to have done battle with a giant squid and a giant octopus in the same decade. He encountered the octopus in Wake of the Red Witch in 1948.
