Although only 25 years old, Peter Ustinov was hired to write, produce and direct this thinly disguised tribute to the British boffins who invented radar. A pretty good job he did of it, too, with several injections of his irrepressible wit in the dialogue. He only falls down in scenes where war war takes second place to jaw jaw. The starry cast is headed by Ralph Richardson as a meek, slightly eccentric scientist who ends up taking part in a nighttime test raid into Cologne to bomb a German-held radio station. Ustinov's hand is particularly assured during the exciting action sequences.
