This British marine drama has all the stiff-upper-lip characteristics of the period, with submarine commander John Mills giving a virtual repeat of his performance in the 1943 drama We Dive at Dawn. But he's just fine for all that. Richard Attenborough, as the stoker who becomes hysterical (a virtual expansion of his role from In Which We Serve), also gives a solid performance in line with many of his weak, blustery characters of the period. And Helen Cherry makes an effective, if brief, appearance. There are lots of popular British faces here - Nigel Patrick, Lana Morris, James Hayter (providing some light relief to the intense, life-or-death proceedings), George Cole, Bernard Lee and Kenneth More among them. The film was typical fare for director Roy Baker, who relished dramas involving people being tested to their limits. This one was enormously popular in its day.
