The much-filmed classic adventure yarn by Jack London is given a smooth 1990 gloss by Disney with the violence and rawness of the original toned down for a family audience. You could carp at the bland script, but plus points include Ethan Hawke's sincere hero, young prospector Jack Conroy, Klaus Maria Brandauer as a guide, the spectacular scenery and a great score.
