After being the top male box office star in the world in the early Eighties, Burt Reynolds' career took a nosedive. This comedy thriller - unreleased in Britain - proved to be another nail in the coffin of his once high-flying stardom. Part of the problem here is that Reynolds insisted on directing himself. He had shown directing promise on 'The End' and 'Sharkey's Machine', but on this evidence his talents lay more in front of the camera and in the direction of throwing punches. The other difficulty is the convoluted plot, about the misadventures of a hardened ex-criminal set loose in the world of Miami drug traffickers, that rambles and meanders out of control. Re-shooting didn't help: it's still morose and dull.
