Director John Ford packs one poignant and powerful scene after another into this episodic but passionate salute to the American torpedo crews in the Pacific during World War Two that shows the pain, loneliness and sacrifice of war. And it seems just right that the movie's battle scenes are the most impressive of all. Ford got so carried away that he fell from some scaffolding and broke a leg, so star Robert Montgomery - who also gives the best performance - took over the direction for the last two weeks.
