In contrast to the 1939 classic, Stagecoach, this Western explores John Wayne's gentler side, as he plays a wounded desperado reformed by the love of a girl, played by the hauntingly beautiful Gail Russell. Although its sentiment has dated, this is an unjustly neglected Wayne film, carefully directed by screenwriter James Edward Grant, who gets thoughtful performances from Wayne, Russell, Bruce Cabot and Harry Carey. Action fans complained about meagre rations in this one, although that's not what this film's about, and the shoot-out at the end does bring the story to a richly satisfying conclusion. Wayne himself produced it.
