Unseen on TV for many years, The Fighting Kentuckian has John Wayne, firm-jawed as ever, as the hero of a vigorous adventure. Set in the early 1800s, it sees Wayne falling for a winsome French girl (Vera Ralston). But it is not to be, as she is only allowed to marry one of her own. Then the colony of French settlers of which she is a part comes under threat and Wayne, of course, rides to the rescue. Not one of The Duke's best fims of the period (argue between yourselves over She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Red River or Sands of Iwo Jima), but it's thoroughly enjoyable and full of action. Oliver Hardy, in a rare film appearance without Stan Laurel, is Big John's bumbling sidekick.
