Unemployed Emilio Estevez learns to steal cars from Harry Dean Stanton, but it's all legal: Stanton is a finance company repossession man.

Then they pick up a car with a dangerous `box of tricks' in the boot.

This loopy film, set in the urban sprawl of Los Angeles, looks fantastic and the ending - coming as it does after a long chase sequence - is unexpected and mischievous fun.

Estevez and Stanton obviously had a great time in this, British director Alex Cox's debut film. It has now become a cult item and not without reason.
