The opening dialogue tells all. 'This spade chick likes to pull intellectually. She even let me do it when I showed her my diploma.' We're on the sex-and-riots scene here and, according to hero Harry (Elliott Gould) they're connected too. Yes, sticks and stones may break your bones, but they sure do give you the urge. The first half of the film is joky, fragmentary and doesn't involve an audience too much. Only when it starts to take itself half-seriously - there's a tremendously staged campus riot - does the film start to be a contender in its field. The prime mover in its saving, though, is Elliott Gould. Beneath the huge moustache is an actor who exudes integrity and sincerity: he's like a latter-day James Stewart in this role. 'I'm gonna be a teacher,' he says, 'and I'm gonna teach the truth to somebody.' He means it too. You can see it in the eyes. Talking of eyes, sharp ones may just spot a young Harrison Ford among the students.
