Burt Reynolds plays a wily jewel thief who has been eluding Scotland Yard detective David Niven for years in this sporadically amusing crime caper. In trying to escape his good ole boy image, Reynolds unfortunately tried the witty and sophisticated route and comes a very poor second to Cary Grant. Still, Niven is a great asset to the film and indeed it works best when he is on screen. To be fair most of the film's problems aren't down to Burt at all but to a troubled production life. Originally pencilled in for Blake Edwards, Don Siegel was eventually hired to do the job, then fired at the end of production and a new ending was shot by Robert Ellis Miller. Not a great film, then, but it passes the time pleasantly enough.
