This Deep South drama looks costly by Republic standards, though the studio could have spent a bit more on the dog-eared script, which is full of stereotypes. Joan Blondell, deservedly billed above John Wayne, dons black stockings and a syrupy Dixie accent as a 'Mississippi riverboat queen' and gets to sing a song called Up in a Balloon, as well as kick up her heels in the campy Ba Ba Ba Boom De-Ay, in which she's given hot competition by Hattie Noel, a sort of poor man's Hattie McDaniel. Singer Ray Middleton, however, gets little chance to exercise his tonsils, aside from the alcohol he pours down them as the drunken villain of the piece. Veteran actresses Blanche Yurka (a thoroughly believable villainess) and Edith Barrett both have some good moments in the supporting cast. It's entertaining and colourful rainy afternoon fare.
