Humphrey Bogart is an escaped convict, wrongly jailed for the murder of his wife in this gripping and unusual thriller. For the first 40 minutes you don't see the star, only hear his voice - and the camera sees through his eyes: a neat cinematic trick that was used to equally good effect a year later in 'Lady in the Lake'. It's only after Bogart has plastic surgery that the camera turns on his 'new' face. Lauren Bacall is as cool as ever as the girl who hides him from the authorities but Agnes Moorehead, given an unusually glamorous role, overacts shrilly. The Bogart/Bacall scenes are a delight, though, even if they are underplayed compared to those they shared in 'To Have and to Have Not'. This film is less of a partnership because Bogart is very much the star and very much in his element. Unusually for the time, the film was shot on location in San Francisco. It's a good yarn with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing.
