The creations of prolific western author William Colt MacDonald, the wandering, wrong-righting trio known as The Three Mesquiteers rode the range in scores of books and more than 100 films. This one would have been almost as unremarkable as all the rest, but for its two major stars. John Wayne, as Stony Brooke, was about to burst through to major stardom. For female lead Louise Brooks, on the other hand, it was a humiliating end to a movie career that had reached the heights with her star roles in the German classics Diary of a Lost Girl and Pandora's Box. For some reason, Stony became the leader of the Mesquiteers in movie adventures, although in the books the leading character was always Tucson Smith, played here by serial hero Ray `Crash' Corrigan. A modern western, this is good of its type.
