Big John Wayne takes on the World War Two Japanese, aided by Anthony Quinn and a small army of Filipino resistance fighters, in this rousing action saga. The Japanese army's overrun the Philippines, sending General MacArthur packing but vowing to return. It's down to the Duke to hold the fort. There's a lot of American flag-waving, but the film's handled with great vigour and flair, especially the battle scenes. Wayne's character of Colonel Joseph Madden is based on a real-life American who fought with the resistance movement.
