Director Brian De Palma, in an unwise move away from his usual chillers and thrillers such as Carrie and The Untouchables, returned to his New Jersey roots to make this lowbrow send-up of gangster movies. Pint-sized comic actor Danny DeVito (with toupee! ) and Joe Piscopo star as two incompetent New Jersey Mafia messengers who make the mistake of trying to steal money from the Mob. As a punishment the Mafia boss, played by Dan Hedaya (better known to fans of TV's Cheers as Nick Tortelli, Carla's one-time husband), secretly instructs both of the bumbling wise guys to kill each other - and a frantic comic chase ensues. De Palma's attempt at comedy mainly misfires, but Harvey Keitel makes his mark as a slum kid made good and there's enough comic energy from diminutive DeVito and the blue-jawed Hedaya to ensure a few scattered laughs.
