Adult in both treatment and theme, this West German film with a largely American cast is brilliantly acted but has a downbeat, clinical atmosphere that somehow prevents your sympathy from getting fully engaged. Jami Gertz and Martha Plimpton, two young actresses who have remained promising in recent years without quite making it to the top, give their best performances to date as the two girls from opposing backgrounds who are both victims of cancer.
