On the surface this drama about six over-the-hill or simply desperate Welsh bachelors looking for true love among the massage parlours and strip joints of Manila is a funny comedy. But along the way, writer Andrew Davies, who won an Emmy (TV Oscar) for the series 'House of Cards', scratches beneath the surface to make some salient points about people's inadequacies and motivations, poverty and wealth. Bill Maynard visibly relishes the role of George Trout, armchair philosopher, raconteur and self-appointed matchmaker, who takes the men to the Far East through his contact club. Although it's nice to see Charlie Drake back on the small screen, his role is not much and doesn't give him any meat into which to sink his tiny teeth.
