Sean Bean takes puppy love to extremes when he puts his monster pet Alsatian before his French-born wife and English daughter in this bittersweet comedy. The dog is allowed to rule the household to ridiculous lengths that any sane person would never stand, but then no one in this film shows the remotest signs of sanity. Where it scores highest is in its language, which is poetic and amusing in turn and a thousand miles removed from the vitriolic prose churned out each week in the 'Mail on Sunday' and other journals by its author, Julie Burchill, the 'enfant terrible' of British journalism.
