In this sentimental but underrated tale, the rector of a cash-starved New York college asks an ex-football coach (John Wayne) to guide its team to victory and thereby boost college fortunes. Naturally, Wayne takes up the challenge but his unorthodox methods of getting players soon meet with the rector's disapproval. Just to make matters worse, conflict with his ex-wife over custody of their daughter lands our hero in court. Under Michael Curtiz's lively direction, this comedy-drama offers spirited performances from a cast which includes Charles Coburn, Donna Reed and little Sherry Jackson. The redemptive power of sport may seem a hackneyed theme, but the script by Melville Shavelson and Jack Rose gives this story a real kick.
