A beautifully shot, haunting film from China, filled to the brim with dazzling shots of filtered skies and fluid tracking camera shots. Told in the style of a family folk story, it's about how the film narrator's grandfather came to meet his wife through her horrific arranged marriage to a 50-year-old winery-owning leper. The colour red cleverly dominates the film throughout, from the canopy of the reluctant bride's sedan chair, lakes of red wine and swaying fields of red sorghum plants to a butcher's shop, bloody battle scenes with Japanese invaders and, in the film's most horrific sequence, the flaying of a donkey and a man. It was a monster hit in its native China thanks to the release of disco and karaoke arrangements of the numerous songs featured.
