As the hard-bitten advertising executive who sets out to save a seven-year-old from a life of drugs, 'St Elsewhere''s Alfre Woodard contributes a fine performance to this strong story, even if the conflict between career and social conscience verges on the melodramatic and the thriller element is not always credible. There are convincing performances also from Michael Warren, as Woodard's advertising colleague, and Martin Balsam, as her friend and mentor. But it is young Deon Richmond, as the child, who steals the picture.
