Pirate films seek little logic. Therefore it's not surprising that, with a mild nod to modern times in the form of the villain's bisexuality, director James Goldstone has chosen to make a buccaneering yarn in the truest Errol Flynn - well, at any rate, Burt Lancaster - traditions. Unfortunately Goldstone is no Michael Curtiz when it comes to marshalling crowd scenes and the dialogue plays the whole thing a shade too tongue-in-cheek. Robert Shaw's dashing daredevil is really the film's only good performance, although heroine Geneviève Bujold makes up for lack of acting strength by showing herself handy with a sword and pitching into her fiery heroine with genuine spirit. British title: The Scarlet Buccaneer.
