This Franco-Belgian production (with English soundtrack) is good to look at and well directed - even if it is somewhat hard to believe that the two protagonists, Malcolm McDowell as the conductor and Charles Aznavour as his wartime acquaintance Romualdi, are Italians! The film's portrait of painful wartime memories starts stickily, but gains strength as it goes on. The many body of the story is well told and often moving, complemented by sensitive performances from both McDowell and Aznavour.
