A quietly absorbing melodrama about loneliness, homecoming and reconciliation. Jeremy Irons dominates the centre of things with a low-key but authoritative performance as the Australian-based Belgian widower called back to his native country to sort out a family crisis. Fanny Ardant is poignant as the married woman in Belgium with whom he becomes involved.
