This glossy, slightly ruder remake of the Spencer Tracy-Joan Bennett-Elizabeth Taylor classic is not far short of the original in warmth and humour, with Steve Martin superb as a doting father who careers off the rails at the news of his beloved daughter's impending wedding.

The script hardly makes the most of Diane Keaton's talents as his wife, though, and Kimberly Williams not unexpectedly lacks Elizabeth Taylor's beauty and glow; at least for once they picked an actress the right height for her on-screen parents: not as tall as Martin, but taller than Keaton.

Martin Short scores in a smartly-written cameo role, and, on the whole, the film makes ideal, well-paced entertainment for reasonably broad-minded families.
