This is a film about obsession. Kaspar Utz is a passionate collector of Meissen figurines and has over 1,000 in his Prague apartment. His other obsession is women, opera singers in particular. New York art dealer Marius Fischer is obsessed with the idea of buying the magnificent collection. But then Utz dies and the collection disappears... A fascinating drama based on Bruce Chatwin's novel, 'Utz' bounces back and forth in flashback, piecing together Utz's life, the reason for his obsessive collecting and the ambiguous relationship he has with his housekeeper Marta (Oscar-winner Brenda Fricker). There are fine performances from Armin Mueller-Stahl as Utz, Peter Riegert as Fischer and Paul Scofield as Utz's close friend Dr Orlik. As the answers to the mysteries of Utz's life unfold towards the end, there are a couple of shocks, but to say any more would spoil things. A drama as enjoyable and delicately balanced as the Meissen porcelain at its centre.
