Out-of-work actor Steve Nichols (John Ritter) earns rent money by making public appearances as comic book hero Captain Avenger. On the way home from an appearance (and still in costume) he foils a corner store hold-up, making everyone think there really is a Captain Avenger. Lightweight fun, with the underrated Ritter skimming merrily over the clichés. Anne Archer, in an early role, plays his girlfriend. Kevin McCarthy enjoys himself as one of the bad guys and a young Kevin Bacon can be glimpsed briefly in the supporting cast. It's engaging enough, but too simple-minded for complete success.
