What this highly inventive horror film lacks in plot and originality, it more than compensates for with ingenious special effects and an exuberant approach. The story has two boys discovering the gateway to hell in the backyard just when the adults in the household are away for the weekend. The slimy, pint-sized trolls that emerge from `the other side' have realistic movement and expression, thanks to the top-notch effects work. But it is in the knowing script that the film scores best. A nice touch has the boys receiving messages subliminally from heavy metal records - a controversial subject around the time the film was made. It's gleefully ghoulish fun.
