Christopher Reeve tends to try and hide behind his ridiculous facial hair and gruff Sean-Connery inspired Scottish accent in this tiresome period thriller. He's the head of the Secret Service, who becomes convinced that a beautiful Southerner (Madolyn Smith Osborne) is leader of a spy ring. But when he arrests her and imprisons her, he can't get over the fact that he wants to get her alone and show her his secret spy etchings. An interesting true-life story is flattened by a dull treatment by British director Jack Gold, who has rarely matched on the big screen his success with 'The Naked Civil Servant'. A shame, also, that the budget didn't stretch to more extras. Scenes of Union battalions returning from action look distinctly undermanned.
