The Social Services people take a right bashing in this timely realist drama that, perhaps unintentionally, somewhat undercuts its own case by showing that they may have taken the right decisions, albeit for the wrong reasons. Jane Horrocks is right on the mark as the single mum whose battle for the custody of her own son is bedevilled by bad luck and her temperament, although you may find the film's relentless prusuit of a downbeat ending a trifle depressing. Food for thought, though, unlike the heroine's cockroach-laced cake.
