This French/German collaboration is the story of Salomon Perel (Marco Hofschneider), a Jewish youth who, in order to survive the Nazi regime, passed himself off as a fully fledged member of the Aryan race. He managed this with a hell of a lot of luck, which makes the story here pretty hard to swallow. It almost comes as no surprise, then, to find that this is supposedly a true story - and the real Salomon Perel, now living in Palestine, appears at the end of the film. Whether the truth has been embroidered or not, director Agnieszka Holland has created a good-looking film that's always interesting, if at times not quite believable.
