Rousing Boy's Own Paper stuff here, with handsome Ronald Colman joining the Foreign Legion after being accused of a crime his brother committed. Camp follower Claudette Colbert takes a shine to him in a big way which arouses the jealousy of Legion commander Victor McLaglen, who proceeds to make Colman's life a misery. Unfair, really, as Colman has fallen for Rosalind Russell. It all comes to a head when Colman is captured by Arabs and only Colbert, now feeling the anger of a woman scorned, can save him... If not quite up to Beau Geste, this well-paced adventure yarn isn't far behind. All the ingredients are mixed thoroughly, and baked to perfection to the classic Hollywood recipe. Colman is a firm-jawed hero and McLaglen plays the nasty to the hilt. Colbert is a little too refined to be a true tart-with-a-heart (Jean Harlow would have been better), but she looks the part and of course rescues our hero in the end. Trivia note: Colman had himself insured for 5000 dollars against camel bite during the making of the film.
