Although many of the team responsible the previous year for the outstanding Western Will Penny were involved in this sporting drama, lightning fails to strike twice. Blame that on a screenplay by David Moessinger that evokes more laughter than pity as former football ace Charlton Heston, now playing for a minor team, tries to come to terms with injury, the humiliation of being replaced and a marriage that's fading almost as fast as his career. Although the right stature, Heston, at 45, is simply too old to be playing even an ageing sports star and the character, wallowing in self-pity, gets little sympathy from the viewer as a result. The film does have good acting from Jessica Walter and Bruce Dern and a few upbeat moments: a few more might have helped.
