A warm welcome for this rarely-seen but powerful dark Western sturdily directed by Robert Wise, and featuring a strong performance by Robert Mitchum in the middle of a great period for him at RKO that also included Crossfire and Build My Gallows High. A fight in a darkened bar-room is only one of numerous memorable moments from this most atmospheric of post-war Westerns, to which Robert Preston, Barbara Bel Geddes, Phyllis Thaxter and Walter Brennan all make striking contributions.
