This story about a struggling young writer living at home in Brighton Beach just outside New York in the Forties is a third mildly amusing chapter in Neil Simon's thinly disguised three-part autobiography, following on from Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues. Jonathan Silverman reprises the Simon role he took in Memoirs (Matthew Broderick took the role in Biloxi). An indication of the descending level of interest in Simon's period comedies is that this episode is a made-for-TV film. A strong cast - Anne Bancroft, Hume Cronyn and Jerry Orbach - can't stop this being rather lacklustre and self indulgent.
