A young orphan, Will, having grown up under the caring and watchful eye of a kind governess, kidnaps disadvantaged children off the streets to begin an 'orphanage' of his own on his inherited pig farm. This sounds schmaltzy and embarrassing, but under very strong direction by fast-rising Mimi Leder and a caring, eloquent script by Betty Goldberg that delicately blends fantasy and sentiment, a lot of it works. Kirk Cameron plays the confused teenager with dignity. Innocent hopes and dark fears engender an equal number of sad and happy moments in what turns out to be an achingly authentic piece of American middle-class experience.
