The singer and actor is probably best known for the romantic drama In The Mood For Love for which he landed the best actor award at Cannes.
Other career highlights include Chungking Express, Happy Together and the cop thriller Infernal Affairs.
He and his younger sister was raised by his mother after his father left them and he first got work as a TV actor.
Subsequent feature roles saw him pairing up with the likes of John Woo and Tran An Hung.
In 2002, he starred in the thriller Infernal Affairs, which was picked up by Martin Scorcese, and spawned two sequels.
Recent work includes the historial drama Hero with Jet Li and Maggie Cheung and the spoof Chinese Odyssey.
