The soft-core porn film which catapulted former Miss Holland Sylvia Kristel into the fantasy mind of most post-pubescent male teenagers of the mid Seventies. Kristel, of course, plays the eponymous heroine - the wife of a diplomat who encourages her to experiemnt with some extramarital shenanigans as they arrive in Bangkok, the sex capital of the world. Allegedly based on the exploits of story provider Emmanuelle Arsan, this really is quite a beautiful film tenderly shot and tantalisingly erotic. However, it lacks emotional depth and ends an empty and loveless study of sexuality and decadence. Incredibly, Emmanuelle has spawned at least 11 sequels and even 'inspired' a Carry On spoof.
