Originally made for Swedish TV as a mini-series, this is the cinema version of the epic family drama that won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. But don't let that award lead you to believe that this is a masterpiece. Beautifully filmed and costumed, it is a slow, rambling and unfocussed story of mismatched love. The script is by Ingmar Bergman (the central characters are based on his parents)and the direction by Danish-born Bille August, whose wife, Pernilla, has a central role. well-intentioned but it's a long haul to the final credits.
